Polish - English dictionary
In case our NCM guests want to become more familiar with the Greater Poland language and Poznań hot spots, maybe even chat a bit with its inhabitants the OC prepared this very short dictionary of the region’s dialect. Have a look at these essentianls!
KOZIOŁKI [kosiouckee] - on the town hall’s clock tower there is a monument of two goats. In the noon you can see them coming out and banging their heads
PYRA [purah] - in a slang of Greater Poland province it means “potato” but citizens of Poznań are often called like that too. But please…do not call us Potatoes when you come here, we won’t be angry but it’s so lame !
BAMBER [bumb’erh] - a person who looks like he/she lived on a farm, redneck; used to indicate the settlers from Bamberg who came to Poznan in XVIIIth century
BUŁA [boowah] - bradroll but also a name of the fast-food where a lot of members of ELSA Poznan loved to eat while coming back from parties, meetings, etc. Closed in 2008 (R.I.P.)
LECH KOLEJORZ - name of our football team! Last season they got to 1/16 of UEFA Championship… first Polish team which has gone so far - so we love them just the way they are (Lech! Lech! Kolejorz!)
ROGALE MARCIŃSKIE - on 11th November Poland celebrates the Independence Day. But in Greater Poland province is being sold delicious crescent roll with almond and poppy fulfilling. Those who have friends here are really lucky! [I would like one kilogramme of roghahleh martinsckyie]
MALTA - except the island where the next ICM takes place it is also the recreation area in Poznań with theartificial lake, ZOO garden, park and ski slope -] great place to relax!
BAŁTYK - Baltic Sea, but there was also a cinema called Bałtyk in Poznań (now stands there Sheraton). When you go by bus in Poznan with written direction “Bałtyk” it doesn’t mean you will go at the seaside!
PESTKA [pastckah] - the name of the Fast Tramway line in Poznań. In common language it also means a fruit stone.
TEJ [tey] - a word which alone doesn’t mean anything but it is very often used to end the a sentence or a question
WUCHTA [vuhtah] - a lot of sth
WIARA [viahrah] - this way you call people or friends but only in Wielkopolska. It also means belief or religion and that’s the reason why people from other sides of Poland look at us with confusion when we use that word!
WUCHTA WIARY [vuhtah viahree ] - a lot of people, often used in Wielkpolska
LECH - name of beer, very popular drink here [lahh]
ROJBER [roybear] - a scamp, naughty boy, Bad Boy
PIERDUŚNICA [pier doo schnitz ah] - a gossip girl
PORUTA [pour ootah] - shame
BLUBRY [bloobree] - stories
SZNYTKA [schnitckah] - a sandwich (yummy!)
SZNEKA Z GLANCEM [schneckah s glahnsem] - kind of buncake with icing made of sugar
PLINDZE [plin zeah] - pies made of potatoes
BEJMY [beymee] - money
TYTKA [titckah] - a paper bag to take your food (cause we are nature-friendly ;))
GIGLAĆ - to tickle (watch out for HR team!)
DYLAĆ - to dance (let’s have a party tonight!) when you want to pick up girl or boy from Greater Poland province and go dance together you say: Podylamy tej? [poude lahmy tey?]
LUMPY - clothes or clothes from secondhand, great for ELSA parties [loomp eh’
BIMBA [beembah] - tramway, element of city communication but also a great place for a party (ask people from ELSA Cracow!)
KLUNKRY [ckloonck ree] - old things, word used especially for furniture
LURA [loora’] - about coffee or tea when it’s too watery, shitt happens :P
RAJZEFIBER [reis eh’ fiebear] - anxiety before trip or journey (e.g. to Poland)
RYCHTYG - OK [reah teag]
